This superstar NBA player transcends this world but at the same time refuses to conform to it.
I read this book back when I was a sophomore in high school and wanting to play basketball at the division one level in college. I had always wanted to be much taller than I was and the thing that made me pick up this book the most was the fact that I found out that Dennis Rodman had experienced a late growth spurt at the age of 19. He had grown from 5’9” to 6’8” in two years!
I had always known of Rodman as the player with the wild hair and the numerous rebounding highlights during his days with the Detroit Pistons and then the Chicago Bulls, but I was now eager to find out more. I thought the book was a good read and it was very forthright.
The early chapters showed great insights into his work ethic. I found it interesting how Rodman did not seem to care about the “usual hours” as I have the same habit. I also tend not to waste time and make sure that I am always doing something productive and Rodman’s words go through my head regularly. It was also refreshing to read about the different path that he had taken to the NBA from working as a janitor after high school. He also went to some small and unknown colleges. It was definitely enlightening to find out more about his character and I would say that this book is a must read.
I really enjoyed Chapter 8 that detailed his various sexual encounters and also the chapter on his high-profile romance with Madonna. It’s always fun reading about the exploits of a person who women did not care about at all before he was famous.
The final chapter is great too talking about his trade to the Chicago Bulls and the happiness he felt in meeting and playing with Michael Jordan.
